What are My Responsibilities as a Basset Hound Foster Parent?
- First and most importantly you have joined a group of people dedicated to helping homeless bassets. You are a part of our "family." We will offer you support every step of the way.
- Enjoy what you are doing. You have opened your heart to a basset who needs another chance at life and love.
- Comfort and nurture your basset.
- Keep them safe. Until you know the dog, it’d be best to crate or baby-gate your foster into a room with tile when you go out. This ensures that when you return home, things will be just as you left them.
- Exercise them! A good long walk every day is beneficial for you and the basset hound. This will also be a bonding exercise. If your foster is shy or afraid of strangers, this is a good way for them to be socialized
- Make sure they always have fresh water available. Feed them - some of these guys will be thin and will require supplemental feedings.
- Your foster basset might be going through medical treatment. While the rescue will cover the costs of treatments provided through our rescue-friendly vets, you may need to transport them to the clinic or call someone else with the rescue to assist you in keeping their appointments.
- Bring the basset to the events planned by the rescue. This helps to socialize the hounds and gives us the chance to get to know each other better. Plus, the public will meet your dog. Dogs that attend events tend to be adopted quicker.
- If you need help or are having problems with your foster, call and assistance will be available for you.
- We will notify you when a potential adopter would like to meet your dog. The potential adopter will have already been approved before you are contacted. If you would like to have another BRAT volunteer with you at the meet-n-greet, call us ahead of time and we’ll do our best in finding someone to accompany you.
- BRAT will provide you with a form to complete on your dog. This form tells us about their personalities and quirks. This information will be posted on the Web site. Pictures of your foster will be placed on the website along with the information you provide us.
